What is Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery?

The gastric sleeve, also called sleeve gastrectomy, is a bariatric surgery operation to induce weight loss. It works by reducing the size of your stomach. The word “gastrectomy” means removal of part or all of your stomach. The gastric sleeve operation removes about 75% of your stomach, leaving behind a tubular “sleeve,” about the size and shape of a banana.

How is Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery Performed?

• Gastric sleeve surgery is a laparoscopic (closed) surgery performed under general anesthesia.
• The duration of sleeve gastrectomy surgery changes from person to person, it generally takes 1 hour.
• 5 working ports are used during the surgery. To prevent hernia, the fascia of the port areas is stitched with dissolvable stitches at the end of the surgery.
• You will need to stay in hospital one day before the surgery for preparation.
• Gastroscopy control is of important. Each patient undergoes a gastroscopy check before surgery.

Which Patients Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery Suitable?

• The Operation Suitable for ages 18-65. Patients over the age of 65 will be evaluated medically. Patients with a BMI of 30 and above are evaluated.

What Should Be Considered Before Gastric Sleeve Surgery and on the Day of Surgery?

• Before surgery, a liquid-protein diet is started for a period determined according to the patient's condition.
• You will need to stay in hospital one day before the surgery for preparation. E.g. Blood tests/examination.
• Nausea and vomiting are very rare after surgery.

When can a person who has undergone gastric sleeve surgery return to social life and will there be sagging in the body parts and skin?

• You can return to your social life 1 week after the surgery.
• The risk of sagging body parts and skin varies in direct proportion to the patient's activity status, weight, compliance with diet and sports activities.

When Should you Start Exercising After Sleeve Gastrectomy?

3 weeks after the surgery you may start walks. After the 1st month you can start swimming, yoga, pilates. After the 2nd month you can do weight, fitness etc. Sports that require more effort can be started.

How to Diet After Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

After the surgery, you will be on a liquid diet for 15 days then you will be on a soft puree diet for 15 days, and then solid food will be started at the end of the 1st month.

Will there be any scars after the surgery?

At the end of the surgery, the wound areas are closed with aesthetic methods. After good wound care, aesthetically pleasing results are achieved. In later periods, no obvious scar are seen.

Will Constipation Occur After Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Constipation may occur after sleeve gastrectomy surgery. If constipation happens, the necessary medical treatment will be arranged and provided.

How Much Weight Is Expected to Lose in a Month After Gastric Sleeve Surgery (Sleeve Gastrectomy)?

Weight lost after sleeve gastrectomy surgery varies depending on the patient. There is no target for weight loss per month. This situation varies in patients with different BMIs and different genders. The important thing is to lose weight in a healthy and permanent way.

the disease

What does obesity mean, bariatric surgery and what does vertical sleeve gastrectomy actually look like? There are several possible origins of obesity. It can have a genetic, hormonal or psychological origin, but often it is also due to overeating in combination with lack of exercise. Whatever the actual origin of the disease, it is easy to recognise because it is always accompanied by excessive fat storage. Recent studies show that abdominal fat produces messenger substances that influence the metabolism. As a result, patients not only suffer from obesity but also from diabetes, high blood pressure or joint diseases. In the worst case, this can even put you at high risk of stroke. Obesity can be classified into different degrees using the BMI.

The calculation of the BMI is generally valid and
represents the following formula:

BMI= own body weight divided by the square of his height in metres
For example, if a man/woman is 1.69 metres tall and weighs 85 kilos, he/she has a BMI of 85 : (1.69 x 1.69).
85: 2,8561=29,76086271149
This means that their BMI is on the borderline of obesity.
From a BMI of 30 and more, a person is considered obese.
With a BMI of more than 40, ultimately only bariatric surgery can help.

So react in time and start prevention. If you have already tried everything and any kind of exercise or diet unfortunately has no effect, then it is time to think about bariatric surgery. You should definitely talk to your family doctor about this topic in advance and involve him or her in your decision.

Op. Dr Ahmet Soykurt already recommends various options for obesity treatment from a BMI of 30, depending on the patient's overall condition. Here it is important to get in touch with Dr Ahmet as soon as possible. You will find all contact options on our homepage in the "Contact" section. So start right away by getting the information that is most important to you by giving us a quick call, writing or sending us a WhatsApp message.
